Biography
Doug was born May 19th 1956 in Madison, WI and through out his childhood found pleasure in art and music. An avid outdoorsman and horseman, Doug spent as much time as he could in the back hills of his parents farm in Mt. Horeb, WI. This experience in observing nature in different lighting and weather would carve out his love of painting the landscape. When he traveled to England after high school he spent most of his time in London in the National and the Tate Art Galleries. During this time his passion for painting was cemented. Though out the years of hard work to provide for a young family, Doug would spend much of his spare time in art classes with Ron Lukas (now art director of Dream Works Studio) and studied in the Russian Impressionist style. Later Doug worked full time studying with his wife, artist Susan Diehl. He feels fortunate to be able to continue to hone his skills with great artist such as Bill Reese and Simon Kogan. Doug's goal as an artist is not to deceive the eye, but rather to delight the eye through color harmony and strong design. "I would like people to know what it feels like to be where I'm painting."
Artist Statement
Life abounds in experiences that give the artist an excuse to try, through paint to connect with the viewer. To communicate the simple beauties that are all around us; light as it wraps around a cup, or as it dances though a glass. The close intimate scene or the grand vista, each one offers the painter the same age old challenges- values, edges, composition, color harmonies and drawing. My goal as a painter is basic; to paint the everyday beauty that is our lives.
